Using Word Starter 2010 with a custom setting to Avery 74652 and the correct print stock loaded into the center pinch guide- Printing starts but aborts with a "Paper Size Mismatch error".
The display in Word seems to reflect the custom size for the printing of (4) 2.25x 3.5 name badges. I have tried to load this stock left justified in the loading tray with center pinch guides full open and printing does not abort but stock come out unprinted...but no mismatch error.

Short version
Answer:
Complete the badge template using Word OR the Avery Design Software
Create a Custom Paper Size form and print.
If your printer does not support Custom Paper Sizes, your printer will not do what you seek using the label / badge sheets that you have.
Be Aware: Understand that if the printer does not support Custom Paper sizes, it does not support it. There is no magic fix and things can get complicated.
If No Custom Size Paper supported:
- Have Avery print the project
or
- Buy a more versatile printer
or
- Create the project and have a friend print the project on a printer that supports custom paper sizes
or
- Try the suggestion below in Standard Label Sheet Size

Custom Form for Custom Paper Sizes
IF this printer will allow you to create a Custom Paper Size form, then you may be able to print these odd-sized label sheets without too much trouble / work.
Check to see if the "form" setting is available, if yes, create the form.
HP document:
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >
Left-Click Print Server properties
- Create your Custom form from one of the Index card templates in your printer's forms list.
- Create the custom form to the size of a sheet of labels: 4.25 x 11 inches
When it is time to print:
Paper Size = 4.25 X 11 inches
Media type = Index card

Standard Label Sheet size
Download Template:
Name Badge Insert, 8 per sheet, 5390
This template is the standard 8.5" x 11" size which is supported by your printer.
Complete the badges using Word OR the Avery Design Software
Print the completed sheet of labels on a sheet of regular paper to test.
Reminder:
If you use the Avery software, you can send the project to Avery for printing!
Be Aware:
The next method may -- or may NOT - work as expected.
Photo paper is not a sheet of labels (or badges) -- the printer may sense the difference (is, in fact, likely to sense the difference) and refuse to print.
The problem is that label paper is also not "plain paper" -- using the "Plain paper" setting may result in label sheets jamming in the printer. Conundrum.
No guarantees.
Set the Printing Preferences Media type (kind of paper) to Photo paper (216 x 279 mm / 8.5 x 11 in)
Paper Size: "Letter" 8.5 x 11 in
Media type: Photo paper
Purchase a box / package of the Avery badge refill sheets
EXAMPLE
Avery® Name Badge Insert Refills 5390, 2-1/4" x 3-1/2", Box of 400
That is a LOT of badges - check for a smaller package with fewer sheets!
The trick whether the printer accepts that the label / badge sheet is "photo paper".
Try printing the sheet of labels / badges.
