Just wanted to give an update on my problem with the C4580.  My  new printer successfully printed 2 pages.  Then I tried to scan a page. Printer froze.  I turned off, then back on, LED screen went black and that was that.

After 2 stressful calls to HP Tech Support, it was decided that I had a hardware problem. I was told I would be sent a new printer.  I asked for a refund instead, stating the many problems I had read about on this message board..especially not being able to leave the printer on. I was told that I would receive a new printer directly from the factory that had been extensively tested and that I would not have the problems I was describing. If I encountered any issues after receiving the new printer, then they would send me a refund.

Being the nice person I am, I told them to send me a new one. I will see if getting one ''directly from the factory and extensively tested" makes any difference.  If it acts like others I've read about here it will go back and I'll get the refund and buy something that works.  I am to receive the new one Feb 3 so I'll give another report after I get it and see what happens.

I would like to know how to assign the Static IP address as well.  I just got a Mac and am a new user.  The printer is just fine for my needs but I am more than a little frustrated to have to keep going to the back of the house and unplugging/replugging.

Finally, a replacement is on the way. After fooling around with static, dynamic IP and power connection types and three days of calls to HP, a replacement C4580 is in the mailI was surprised that each of the four tech support persons had a different set of diagnostic routines to go through.  Out of characters here.  I have a three page time-stamed log of the calls.

On the Photosmart C4580, you can set a static IP address from the printer's internal web page.  Browse the printer's IP address and select the network tab.

BTW -- this won't help the sleep problem as that issue is not related to network connectivity.  Also, setting a DHCP reservation is preferable to setting a static IP address as the reservation ensures you won't get a duplicate IP addressed assigned on your network.

Here is the update as promised after receiving a replacement Photosmart C4580.  The replacement acts exactly like the original printer even after HP Support said the printer would be tested and verified before shipping.  When calling back for the sixth time over two weeks and after over 22 hours on the phone with HP Support, receiving a replacement HP Support said they only had contact information in the original service ticket log.  I insisted that I was not willing to go through all of their diagnostics and that I wanted the call escalated to a supervisor.  Consultation with a supervisor resulted in an apologetic response that this was a known problem, they were sorry the replacement didn’t fix the problem and said a replacement in-line power brick would be sent which is not included when they send a replacement printer.  I checked the old power supply with a power meter and found that one pin puts out 16v and the other pin supplies 32v.  These two voltages could be for operation mode and sleep mode but I believe the printer would determine which power to use and not the power brick.  We will see what happens with the new brick and I will provide additional update information.

P.S.  before you deal with HP Support make sure you connect to wall power and don't go through a power strip because HP support will quickly tell you that is the problem.

Also received my replacement C4580 Friday.  Hooked it up directly to the wall plug and have it set up through my wireless, have been turning off when not actively using and so far so good.  I have printed about 10 documents and scanned several things.  So far all is working well. It is a pain to have to get up and turn it off and own....but keeping my finger crossed.  My other real complaints were in talking to the tech support staff, well..they were almost impossible to understand from a language standpoint.  I wasn't ever sure we were on the same page.  My other issue was that I was going to be out of town for a week and asked that they not ship the replacement until Feb 2.  New printer was shipped on the day  of the call and it sat on my porch in the rain for 3 days.  And still it is working...

Wow, This all sounds so familiar, I am now on my 3rd replacement.  Was also told it was the power brick and got a new one but it didn't make a difference. Asked HP if they have been having this problem with this printer and they stated no.  I have just given up.  Works sometimes and not others.  Went through set up with a HP tech but still is not reliable.  What is the point of a wireless printer that does not print wirelessly?  I too got this printer through an Apple promotion.  I have had one HP computer and two printers.  Have had problems with all HP products.  In fact when I received one of my replacement printers the Fed Ex woman told me that HP keeps them in business.  Don't think I will ever buy another HP product.

I can't believe that my replacement is still working (and wireless) as long as I  turn it off before 30 minutes..haven't tested past that but am afraid to...especially after continuing to read about the issues others continue to have.

I went back to the HP home site and found an email address for the Chairman of the Board.  He may or may not actually get the email.but I thought nothing ventured..nothing gained.  Will be interesting to see if I get any kind of response from anyone..I suggested that someone with some authority go to the forum and look at the issues on the C4580 and decide if that is the type of product they want to represent HP.

K-55,  Thanks for the information however disappointing it may be since the second replacement is on its way.  I replaced the power module as mentioned in the previous post at the direction of HP even after I told them that the voltage was as specified (16v & 32v) of the original power module/brick.  After reporting that the replacement power module did not solve the problem (imagine that) HP said they would send another (2nd) replacement printer.  This is a lot of work for a $95 printer but it is the principle of demanding some degree of acceptable service.  Interestingly enough the FedEx lady told me they had the same exact printer with similar problems and junked it and bought something different (probably an epson, I didn't ask).

I will continue to let them send me replacement printers until they tell me to quit removing and keeping the new printer cartridges and usb cables.  I have recoverd the cost of the printer with the second replacement but have not recovred from the frustration, anguish and loss of service.

Braveone:  I am happy for you if you are happy but I bought a wireless printer to operate as a wireless printer without attending to it every two hours. I am not happy.

Under normal conditions I too would be relentless in getting the printer to work as it should and would keep sending it back until I was satisfied, however in this case it is more trouble than it is worth having to make the one hour phone call, trying to understand the tech support who doesn't speak English, packing it up, arranging for another pick up and then having to reinstall it again on two computers.  Just not worth my time.  I will try doing the turn off thing when not using but again this is then not a wireless printer.  My solution to this problem is to never purchase another HP product and telling everyone I know not to also.  HP ARE YOU LISTENING???
