First message was "ink cartridge past expiration."  I turned the printer off and on again. Tried printing again. New message  was

"Ink System Failure",  I bought a new cartridge, installed it, tried again, still "Ink System Failure".  The printer is a 3 in 1, Black Plus 5.

About 4 years old.

Hello rubadub,

Here is the HP Troubleshooting article in regards to your issue.

An Alphanumeric Code (Example: '0x...' or 'C2...') or 'Ink System Failure' Error Message Displays on...

Ink system failures generally reside within the ink cartridge, the printhead, or the printer. Since you have already replaced the ink cartridge the problem lies within the printhead or the printer.

The printhead of the C7250 is permanent and can not be replaced or cleaned externally from the unit so there is not much we can do with working with it.

Go through the article and follow the steps in order

1. Remove the cartridges and reinstall

2. Use the automatic printhead cleaning utility (sometimes you may have to run this several times)

3. Reset the product

4. Service the product

If the first three steps don't resolve the issue, there isn't much else to do other than service the product. Post back if the first three steps help or do not help, maybe we can think outside of the box before going to servicing, but let's see if the general standard steps work.
