The Photosmart 2610 does need to be wired, but it can be USB (to your computer) or LAN (connected with a Cat5 cable to your router).  I have mine set up with the LAN cable, it is available to all the computers on my network, including the wireless ones.

As for durability, the mechanism this printer was based on was a very reliable one, I would match it favorably against any current HP consumer level printers other than the Officejet Pro 8600/8700 series.  (The Officejet Pro 8600 and 8700 series printers use pigmented inks which are not as suitable for photo printing as your Officejet 2610.)

It sounds like you have an interesting set of projects ahead.

Just wanted to tell you I got the 7520 working at least so far, not sure if it will continue, I gave one more thing a try before I went out to buy an Epson. Since I had nothing to lose I took the ink and printhead out again, but this time I took coffee filters and distilled water and wiped down the black fiber strip under the carriage and the entire inside that the carriage went over. everything was completely clogged with ink. I used dry filters to blot up the water and then sprayed it with compressed air. I put it back together and rebooted it , a carriage jam came up but no blockage so I put a THIN layer of spray oil on a filter and wiped down the rod and platform the carriage slides on, no more jam but it did print a status page with no black again. so I did another cleaning and got stripes of black ,did a second level and black was back. I used up most of the new inks I had put in trying to fix this thing but I did print a test picture and no problem. Later today I'm going to try to get back to work on the baby's scrapbook so we'll see if it continues to work or if I'm buying the Epson. I will say during my research I found people having the same problem a year before I bought mine. That disappoints me HP knew they had what I think is a design problem but continued to sell these models. It's curious they no longer sell Photosmart's now.

UPDATE It printed great for a couple of pages, than I had to leave when I came back first try the cartridge jammed again and this time I can't figure out why. Tomorrow it's off to Office Max to buy the EpsonXP830 and pray it last more than two years. I am NEVER buying HP again
