Printer Ink Question

I very rarely, if ever, print using color, but my color cartridges always run out before the black in cartridge.

I use the 933Xl and 932XL cartridges.

When I don't use the printer for several days it cycles or does sometehi9ng that gives me a message saying don't open any covers.

Does the printer use color even when printing black?  If it does, is there a way to keep it from using color?

I would like to inform you that the color ink is used even to print black. However, you can change the print settings to greyscale and it will use the black ink only.
