Have an HP Photosmart C4580 wireless printer. Have changed both cartridges only to get the error message of "missing or disabled" error message. Upon looking under printer setup, I found a "pen failure - color cartridge" message. Is there a home-based fix, a service fix or has the unit died? Would like to take care of the problem ASAP. Thanks.

If the printer is not in warranty, that implies HP cannot replace it for free. However, if you call 1-800-474-6836, they may be able to provide you with a discounted price on a more up-to-date model.

Found the problem. The color cartridge printer contact has a glob of black ink right over the contact points for the color cartridge. Seems fairly dry. Can I use rubbing alcohol to clean it? Very tight area to do that work. Dry Q-tips barely take any ink off.

Hello margo57. If the steps in Ciara's document above did not resolve the issue, you would need to replace the printer, as indicated at the bottom of the document. If the printer is in-warranty, you can call HP at 1-800-474-6836 to get it replaced. If you are unsure of the printer's warranty, you can check here: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/wc/home?ac.admitted=1381173165579.876444892.199480...
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I'm only here to help!
