Hello, I replaced the black cartridge and the printer doesn't recognize it.

I checked both using the HP software on my notebook and accessing via browser on the printer's IP: there's only a "cartridge failure" error message.

It looks like the new cartridge is over (0 pages left), even if it isn't.

The new cartridge is an HP original 301XL black, and it is declared compatible with my printer's model.

The old cartridge - which worked, until it ran out of ink - is an HP original 301 black (non-XL).

The tri-color ink cartridge, which is over and which I don't care about, is an HP original 301 (non-XL).

Things I've already tried:

- Turn off and turn on the printer

- Remove and insert again the new black cartridge

- Print an alignment page

- Remove also the tri-color ink cartridge, leaving the black alone (I don't care about the color printing)

Thank you for your help

Hi! @Fingard, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand that your printer does not recognize the new cartridge.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Kudos to you for trying out few steps before reaching out to us.

Please try the steps recommended below.

If the printer is off, press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Remove any protective tape that still might be on the nozzles.
Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.
Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the cartridge is inserted into the correct slot.
The tri-color cartridge () goes in the slot on the left.
The black cartridge () goes in the slot on the right.
Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.
Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
Close the cartridge access door.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot ink cartridge issues.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

Hello MrRobot,

I already tried removing and inserting again the black cartridge without success.

The tri-color cartridge is currently removed, since I don't use it.

Do you confirm that the 301XL is supported for my printer model, as declared in the cartridge description?

Yes, the cartridge is declared to be compatible with my printer also on your site.

So why isn't it recognized?

Is it mandatory to insert both cartridges (color and black) even if I only want to print "grayscale mode"? Or I can just insert the black cartridge and remove the color cartridge?

Edit: I see it's not mandatory, since I inserted the old black cartridge back (which is over, and non-XL) and it allows me to print (of course the printed page is blank since there's no ink left).

So the issue seems to be with the new HP original cartridge.

Is there anything I can do?

Hi @Fingard, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @A4Apollo, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Whenever you replace any cartridges. You would need to wait for the printer to print an alignment page.

Once the alignment page is printed, you need to place the alignment page on the scanner bed and color or black copy.

Only when the alignment is successful, you will be able to print correctly.

To print the alignment page, you need enough ink to be present in both cartridges.

Please refer to this article for assistance.

Once the alignment is done, you can switch to single cartridge mode or grayscale printing.

Refer to this article for assistance in printing black only.

If the issue persists, please contact our phone support for any service options available for the cartridges or the printer.
