I replaced a 21 cartridge with a 21XL but the printer stopped working (light flashing). I took the 21XL out and the printer now works (colour only). I understand the the 21XL is a direct replacement for the 21. Any suggestions?

Hi! @pete36, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand after replacing the cartridge on your printer the printer stopped working.

Don't worry I'd love to help you.

Did you make any changes to your printer apart from replacing the ink cartridge?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Reset the printer to clear any hardware issues or error states.
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
   NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue still persists, try to perform a manual cartridge cleaning.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot ink cartridge issues.

Also, try replacing the ink cartridge and check if it helps.

If the issue still persists, it is a hardware issue please contact HP support for service options.
