I purchased a HP Officejet Pro 8610 a few months ago to use primarily for scanning and copying for a home based business. I have been unable to get the printer to print even one sheet of paper without mangling the paper and printing things on an angle. I am using brand new paper from a fresh ream. I have tried reloading the paper, using less paper in the tray, using more paper in the tray, etc. My primary Canon printer has recently died, and now I must be able to print business documents and checks on my HP printer. Any suggestions?

Some Ideas
========================================================
The printer may need to be aligned after not being used as a regular printer for a long time.
Down along 2/3 of the way through the document, find "Step 4: Calibrate the Linefeed" -- you will want to complete this one!

Beautiful Does Not Equal Usable
The HP 8610 may not care for the water content of the paper or perhaps the printer does not like the weight of the paper you are trying to use. That is the simplest and more straight forward answer.
Assuming you have properly pre-selected the Media type in Printing Preferences so the printer knows what kind of paper to expect and how to respond -- the printer may not be able to handle that particular paper. If this is the case, and regardless of the perceived quality of the paper, there is no way to force the printer to accept the paper. It is not a matter of "bad paper" -- it is a matter of how the printer sensors respond to the paper.
Beautiful paper does not always equal paper that prints in every printer. HP printers are not the only fussy printers in the world. All high quality printers might respond to paper in this manner. You do not have to use HP paper, by the way. Try different paper. Put this paper away in a cool dry place to store it and try it again later.

Printing Prefences
If you have not yet done so, you can adjust the Media type in Printing Preferences.
Adjusting the Media Type tells the printer what kind of paper to expect; the printer adjusts the rollers and the spring tension to properly pull the paper into the printer.

The Case of the Missing Page Order
You mentioned something in passing that may be important:
You will use your OfficeJet 8610 to print checks.
If the printing of Checks requires the printer's "Page Order" feature, you might be interested in the following:

- Page Order – Front to Back / Back to Front
- Option 1: Use OfficeJet Pro 8600 Driver
