Deskjet 1220 C
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After a Windows 10 upgrade my Deskjet 1220 C printer no longer works as it has been paused. Has worked perfetly for the last one year with a Spectre 60 bit laptop and multiple years with Windows 7 and XP.

Hello @8440Security

To clarify, you say you had that printer working with a "Spectre 64 bit" laptop recently?

What model number was it and what operating system did it have?

I was reminded by  Expert Dragonfur that the Deskjet 1220c does not have official drivers for Windows 10.

But you can try an alternative driver instead or use the built in generic printer driver built into Windows 10.

Here are her instructions to do so...

===========================

Try using "Add a Printer" -- a good alternate driver:  Officejet Pro K850 Series

For example:

  • Example – Add a Printer > Printer that I want isn’t listed

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer >

Click The printer that I want isn’t listed >

Click Add a Local or Network Printer…

Click Next

Choose a Printer Port window:

Select an existing port from list

  • If using USB, search for USB001 or other USB# or select first Port number (ie. LPT1)

Install the Printer window:

Left column:  HP

Right column: Scroll, search, select (click) printer

And / or if Printer is not found in list:

Click Windows Updates >

Wait several minutes for list to update

Left columnHP

Right columnScroll, search, select printer  (Officejet Pro K850 series)

Choose a Printer Port window:

Select an existing port from list

  • If using USB, search for USB001 or other USB# or select first Port number (ie. LPT1)

Click Yes to “…allow this app to make changes to your device” (UAC) >

Optional: Type a printer Name or use the default >

Next > Wait for printer software to install … >

Next >

Click Share this printer so that others on your network can find and use it

Optional Fill in information for printer location and a comment

OptionalClick Set as the default printer

OptionalClick to Print a test page

Finish

===============================

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks.

It has worked for a year so something happened after W10 was updated

Updated is different than Upgraded.

So I need to understand in better detail what is happening...

When you hit the Print button, the print is paused.

Is the printer still listed in the application or as the Default printer in Windows?

Unfortunately I can only speculate here.

Have you tried clearing the Print Spooler to start over?

Type Services in the Search bar and choose it in the list of choices.

Scroll down to Print Spooler in the new window that opens.

Click on it to select it.

Click on Stop the service.

Then click on Restart the service.

This clears out files waiting to be printed if they get hung up in the system

Restart the printer.

Try reprinting again.

Any luck?

If not, does the Device Manager show any caution signs next to the Printer or in the USB controllers?

They can be uninstalled and will reinstall when the PC is rebooted.

(Let me know if you need instructions for that)

Or you can try removing the printer from the PC and reinstalling it via the instructions posted earlier.

But If a Windows Update is truly preventing the printer from working, I wont have a fix for that.

When selecting which printer to print to the Deskjet 1220 C dispalyes the message 'Printer paused'. It started after a W10 update. I have tried to reinstall the driver that has worked before the update for one year with the Spectre 64 bit laptop. A second Epson WorkForce 845 works fine.

Again, what is the full model number of your Spectre please?

and

Have you tried clearing the Print Spooler as I mentioned above???

After that, try resetting the printer.

  • Turn off the PC and Printer.
  • Unplug the power cord and USB cable.
  • Leave the printer off for a full minute.
  • Then plug the cords back in and turn on the printer.
  • Then turn on the PC.

If still nothing, install and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.

It might find the issue.

Turning print spooler off and on did not help

Disconnecting power and USB did not help

HP print doctor fixed the problem.

Thanks

The HP print doctor corrected the issue with the printer being paused but when printing a pdf file it did not adjust it to the chosen paper size meaning that only part was shown on the print.

I correctly printed the same file from a 8440p laptop that is not updated with the latest version of Windows 10

So the conclusion is that the latest Windows 10 update caused the problem.

Okay good to know the HP Print Doctor worked. :generic:

Im not sure what happened with the partial page printing...

I assume you checked the settings in what ever PDF reader you are using is set the same as the laptops.

Be sure the PDF reader is up to date also.

Settings:

Adobe Reader - Print range = All

Page Scale- Fit to page.

Sometimes you may have to select 'Advanced' at top of print dialogue box and then select 'Print as image'.

Good luck.
