Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What cartridges are in the printer?  If the printer has any Instant Ink cartridges installed you will need an Instant Ink subscription and need to have the printer connected to the internet.

If there are Instant Ink cartridges installed and you do not want a subscription you will need to purchase the appropriate retail cartridges for your printer.

I am currently experiencing the same issue you have.

I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER HP PRODUCT because they're forcing their customers to enroll in their instant ink program.

NEVER AGAIN!

My printer model is HP OfficeJet Pro 6968.  I purchased HP902XL from Office Depot.  The package is sealed, and I've always thought of Office Depot as a reputable retailer.

The packaging, and when opened cartridges look like guinine HP ink cartridges.  Is there something elese I need to look for when purchasing HP ink cartridges?

Are all the cartridges (black and color) from Office Depot?  If so I would first suggest going through the first five steps in the document here.  If the steps there do not resolve the issue I would call HP Support.

From a post by Sunshyn2005, to contact HP Support see the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.
