Printer set to auto select for paper worked fine picking up A4 paper from tray 2. Used tray one for an A5 printing job and now printer won't revert to tray 2 for normal A4 printing; keeps asking me to 'load tray 1 with A4'. tried turning off and on, fiddled with obvious settings but keeps coming back to tray 1.

Make sure that the attributes of the print job (in terms of paper size (e.g. A4 or Letter) and paper type (e.g. Plain or Letterhead) and (possibly) paper source (tray identifier, or "printer auto-select") can be matched with what the printer configuration thinks is in tray 2.
Check /modify the printer's paper tray configuration using the Manage Trays page on the Embedded Web Server.

Thanks for the post; hadn't changed any settings when switching to tray one for the specific A5 job - and have attempted to put everything to 'auto select' A4 and 'plain' but it still refuses to pick tray 2! stupid question, but how to I look at the 'embedded web server' app you mention? I've been using the pc installed software provided with the printer and it has worked fine for past couple of months.

Just point your browser at the IP-address of the printer.

It may (but, of course, may not) provide some advice relevant to your issue.
