Printer will only print squares as text

Your suggestion worked for printing Word and Excel - thank you.  However the scanner still doesn't work unless you log into an HP account and scan from there.  When this printer/scanner works, it is great but when it doesn't, HP has the very worst customer service that I have ever encountered.  This will definitely be the very last product we purchase from HP for our office.

Setting the printer's PCL/Symbol Set setting to Roman-8 from PC-8 did not work for me either.  Only setting back the firmware or using the generic driver seems to work, but there's still no solution for mobile printing.

Ok guys so have some good news.  HP is getting ready to release a new firmware as they are aware of the issues with the most recent firmware.   There is an older firmware version floating out there that I was able to get 1908c this was released in 2019.  It works just fine for everything.  If you can hold out till the next release it would be better.  However if you want to search you can find it out there.  You will need to put the pul2 file onto a usb drive insert it into the printer and it will ask you to update the printer.

      My printer is the HP Pagewide Pro MFP477dw. It only prints little boxes instead of texts.  I have deleted the printer and reinstalled, nothing works.  What can I do?

This solution worked, but only for a day. I was able to print again from word and everything was normal. However, the next day, the squares came back. Check and PCL settings were still set to Roman 8. Of course, this makes no sense...

Hey Everyone that had the issue with printer printing squares and rectangles instead of "real" letters...

HP has an update available but I am hesitant to update my printer after the last update messed us all up.

Has anyone updated their printers since September 2021and if so, did it fix the problem of printing symbols instead of words?
