HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910

When I installed the software for my Printer a shortcut was created on my desktop (HP Printer Assistant). Open that and click on Set Preferences, click on Advanced...

right under printer features click on Print in Grayscale a dropdown menu should appear, select Black Ink Only, click ok and then appy and it should work.

Are you having issues printing in black only on your Officejet Pro 8500?

Note the Officejet Pro 8500 printer will require ink in all the colors, even to print in black only.  This printer has separate printheads and ink supplies, with plumbing to connect them.  Printing without ink in one or more colors could result in air being ingested into the plumbing and/or  damage to the printheads.
