Why does my printer always use the photo ink cartridge instead of the regular black cartridge when Im printing a document? Im not using photo paper, just the regular paper.

Hi,
The setup may vary from printer to printer but basically (for Windows):
(a) Double click printer icon on desktop,
(b) Click Set Preferences,
(c) Click Advanced,
(d) Select "Black Ink only" for Print in Grayscale
(e) Click Ok/Apply ...
Note: Printer still needs all color inks and it will consume a very small amount of inks during warmng up process.
Regards.

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.
I had a Photosmart 7520 for a while -- nice printer -- black ink cartridge use is confusing unless you know how the black ink is selected by the printer.
Make sure you have selected Media type "plain paper".
This helps the printer make the right choice to use "Black" instead of "Photo Black" ink.
Bob explains the use for the regular black 564 and the photo black 564 ink cartridges used in the Photosmart 7520 and the Photosmart 7525 printers.
