Greetings @ThreeJoys,
Welcome to HP Forums and thanks for the post.
I see you are unable to reconfigure the printer on your computer running on MAC OS X 10.11.
Don't worry, I will be glad to help.
Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.
Have you deleted the printer from system preferences?
Have you changed the router recently before this issue started?
Are the computer and the printer connected to the same network? (Please have the printer and the computer connected to a 2.4Ghz network and not a 5Ghz network.)
Please try the procedure mentioned below.
First, uninstall the printer software from your computer using the method suggested in the HP Article below. (Have the printer disconnected from the computer during uninstallation.)
HP Printers - Uninstalling HP Printer Software (Mac)
Once you have uninstalled the printer software, reset the printing system.
HP Printers - Resetting the Printing System (Mac)
Download the full feature software from our website.
Run the setup, turn the printer On only when the setup prompts for the printer.
Refer to this HP Article for assistance.
