Hello,
I need advice on how to bypass the printer message that Magenta cartridge has to be replaced. A year or so ago the printer started printing color copies that were all messed up, so we started using only the black and white option, as this is what we need at home. I changed the black printer cartridge a couple of times and did not touch the color ones as we did not print any color prints. Now the printer refuses to print black and white prints and displays the message to change the magenta cartridge. The computer screen option for printing has been "Print Color as Gray".
I am not sure how to resolve the problem. I really hope someone out there might be able to help.
Thank you very much in advance.
With kind regards,
Neeta

Firstly, I would like to inform you that by opting to print only in Black will not only use Black it will use all color Toners to get the Black/grey color with a good print quality.
To continue printing, suggest you to set this option on printer.
Menu -> System setup -> Print Quality -> Replace Supplies -> Override out
Menu -> System setup -> Print Quality -> Color supply out -> Continue Black,
Please click the "Thumbs up" icon below to thank or click “Accept as Solution” . if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Hi Neeta,
I think I can help. First, with the message about the magenta (or any other color cartridge) you should also get a message that says continue and a list of page counts to remind you again. something like 50, 100, 200, 400, never. Just choose Never, Since you didn't mention this, I assume that you didn't get this prompt. I am on a trip, so I don't have direct acceess to my HP info, so let me note a few things. Even when you print in black only, with a color printer, there is some wear on the color cartridges. Whlle this is very little while you are printing in mono, HP printers still keep track of the rotations and messages the user when the usage is so many pages that there might be a problem. This is because the surface of the green roller on the cartridge can wear down so far that it can short out the charging system for the print process. If you take out the magenta cart and look at the green roller, please let me know if you can see all green or if there are circular bands that look metallic (aluminum). That would be an indication that the cartridge cannot be in the machine anymore for any kind of printing. The printer might have to be placed in color print mode instead of print in greyscale in order to get the continue message noted above. Please try to put the machine back in color mode for a short time and see what happens. Then you might get the continue message and you can just continue to print until the system wears the drums out so much that the cartridges will have to be changed. It might take a few prints to get the message. you can then switch back to printing in greyscale. Hope this works, please let me know.

rk_russelking - you might be confusing differences between printing in greyscale (which uses ONLY the black cartridge but slightly wears the color carts as noted in my reply) and our mode called Process Black which makes darker black printing for photos and other higher quality images by adding some M C and Y to the black channel. This can be accessed by choosing text in full color and not K only, and not choosing K only for other types of images or in other color settings. Have fun, Dovid
