I just installed a new computer with Windows 10.  I downloaded software for HP Deskjet F4480 and I continue to get the message the printer is in "error state".  Please help.  I have been at this for hours. I unpluged it (twice) and did what is indicated below and it still will not work.

Hello, @auntkewin – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I see that you are facing issues with the Deskjet F4480 printer installed on your Windows 10 PC. Do not worry, I’m here to help!

First off, let’s make sure that the printer hardware is fine. Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

If the copy comes out fine, the printer is fine and the issue is with the printer drivers. Perform a clean install to fix the same:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Deskjet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL27506/al-111489-2/DJ_AIO_05_F4400_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140... to install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂
