Scanjet 8270
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been happily using my Scanjet 8270 in Win 10 with compatability mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3) as this is the only option which it worked correctly.

Last week there was an update for Windows 10 and now the scanner takes the paper in half way or sometimes not at all and then displays an error, "DMA Timeout"

I have since installed the driver on a different pc running Windows 8.1. I have also set it to run in compatability mode with Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and it works perfectly.

I need to use it on the pc with Windows 10.

Does anyone know which update could have caused this problem, if so, can I delete it?

Is there any other solution - really inconvenient as I do alot of scanning

Any help please, Thanks

Hi Yvette4,

Thank you for joining the HP Support Forum. Understand your frustration here being not able to do a complete scan using Scanjet 8270 on win 10.

Allow me to help you with some basic troubleshooting guidelines. Before that, let me explain what is DMA.

DMA is an abbreviation for Diret Memory Access, an access method for external devices (in your case the external device will be your Scanjet 8270) where the data transfer is not done by the central processor, but by a small special processor called DMA controller. It uses a procedure called cycle stealing, where the central processor memory access cycles are delayed for very short times to intersperse DMA controller memory access cycles.

DMA timeout is basically due to the insufficent timing allocated to completely execute the data transfer. You may refer to the steps below for basic troubleshooting.

1) Uninstall all your existing HP scanning drivers and software.

2) Download latest driver and software version from HP website. Choose Windows 10 32bit or 64bit operating system version download. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=1102924&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4192

3) re-install the HP scanning driver and software.

4) Do a scan job after completion.

5) replaced the existing USB cable with a shorter USB2.0 compatible cable for the connection if the reinstallation does not help.

Do let me know what is the outcome. Good luck for your troubleshooting.

Thank you very much for your reply and recommendations. I have tried your suggestions but sadly it still does the same thing. I have the scanner on a different pc running Window 8.1 and it works fine but this is not the pc I want to use it on. I would appreciate any other suggestions.

Thanks

Hi Yvette4,

Thank you for your reply. If the solution provided previously does not work, let see whether you can view the update history from your PC.

1) go to windows update and select "view update history".

2) Then go to "Installed Updates"

3) The page will go to "Uninstall an update"

4) Uninstall those updates until to the date where you use the scanner without any issue. (especially those updates related to security and system)

5) Restart your PC after you have completed the process.

Your scanner should be able to work after you restore the system back to the time before the error occured.

It would be good if you can re-install your HP driver and software again after the system restore done.

Do let me know the outcome. Good luck!
