HP OfficeJet 5740
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

When I open System Preferences, choose Printers and Scanners, choose Scanner, click Open Scanner, and all I get is a blank window. It was working fine just a few days ago ... so why would this occur?

Also: I tried accessing the scanner from a different Mac laptop and had the same problem, so the problem is not specific to my machine (I have a MacBook Pro running OSX10.9.5). I also tried restarting the computer, shutting down and rebooting the printer, and, of course, opening and closing System Preferences multiple times. AND, I went to "wireless setup" on the printer and gave it my wireless router password and that worked ok too.

Thank you - I will supply any additional information needed, because I am very puzzled about this sudden problem.

Hi,

Have you tried a different Mac on the same network or a different one?

If it is the same network, a network issue might occur..

Try restarting your router and check for any difference, then check for any change.

If the same persists, are you able to scan using HP Easy Scan or do you see any similar behavior?

Thank you for your quick reply. After going through the steps you recommended, it now seems clear that even though my printer is apparently "on the network" (has its own IP address etc), my computer does not "see" it. I tried downloading the latest version of driver software for the Inkjet 5740 series but it's clear that, running HP utility, we get stuck during "Device Discovery" when it cannot find a device to discover. So the problem goes beyond scanning, obviously. The question becomes, what now?
