Scanner too bright

Hi, 

I have an Envy Printer/Scanner 5534 model. I have tried every setting and preference but the scanned picture comes out almost bleached looking with much of the original picture detail lost. How do I rectify this please?

Assuming the original image is "decent", that is, the quality is what is needed to produce a good scanned image, then you need to adjust the settings before the image is scanned.

IF it works in XP, the following is very nice software and does provide some primitive tools to edit the scan settings.

Download and Install:

HP Scan Extended

Example - Scan Photo with Auto-Detect Size and adjust color / exposure

Open program >

section Scan

• Item Type Photo
• Page Size Auto Detect Size
• Source Document Feeder if loaded / Flatbed (glass)
• Page Sides 1-sided

section Image

• Color Mode Color

section Destination

• File Type JPEG
• Send To Local or Network folder
• CHECK Show Viewer After Scan (scan preview)

Verify / Adjust

• Item Type
• Source
• Page Sides
• Page Size

section Image >

Verify / Adjust

• Resolution (ppi) 300
• Optional > Adjust Color Mode
• Optional > Adjust Exposure for Color and Gray

section Destination >

Verify / Adjust

• File Name + > Enter desired parameters (Base Name, etc) > OK
• Save to Folder Verify / Adjust destination folder

       Example - Browse: C:\Users\AccountName\OneDrive\Documents

• Less >
• Create New Scan Shortcut > Enter a name for your new shortcut >
• Create
• Scan to use your new template (scan the image)

This has definitely improved the scan but I still feel that my ancient printer and scanner did a better job without this much hassle. I really appreciate your help Dragon Fur, thank you.

You are welcome.  I am glad the results are better.

Commentary

Yes, some printers / scanners are better than others.

This is an economy printer; the components are justifiably less professional grade than those in a higher-end printer.

While there are no guarantees, particularly regarding advice you see here on the 'net, printers are one of the devices where you are likely to "get what you pay for".  That is not just an HP "thing";  any manufacturer can provide you a better quality device when you are able to spend more money.

Whether the extra money spent is worth it depends on your budget, your particular needs, and your situation.  For example, many (if not MOST) new printers / scanners / combination printer-scanners do not support XP.
