I am having this problem too. Went to download the new driver and for my Officejet Pro 8600 N911A (Windows 7), the latest drivier version is 28.8. I have always preferred HP printers, but now I am re-thinking. This is definitely a step back that seems like should be solved by now.

There used to be a post letting us know of a 3rd party software that we could use with the printers to scan multiple photos at once.. it seems the moderator removed it.
It is called ScanSpeeder. Google it and you will find the webpage and software. It works great.

Bull that is no solution . I was told your software identifies and separates. Either it does or doesn't. and if it doesn't Then your forum ans your techs better get their stories straight, because answer is going to facebook
Scanning one at a time or 4 and cropping is not practical
