WOW! What a GREAT fix for the $400 printer I bought and fully expected to work for more than two weeks.
HOW ABOUT SOMEONE AT HP START UPDATING DRIVERS SO THAT THIS PROBLEM STOPS HAPPENING?
I will NEVER...EVER buy another HP product again. I can't believe that this is their "solution."
"Hey! Just reset EVERY printer you've EVER had connected to get ours working, because we don't care enough about mac users to write a new driver once a year or so. Please give us KUDOS for helping with this problem!"

I just found this by searching online and whilst I'm glad that there is something that I can do, I really am amazed by how many problems there are with HP printers. I've only owned this a couple of weeks and have spent more time looking for solutions to problems than I ever spent with my trusty old Cannon.
I totally now understand why people say to avoid HP like the plague when it comes to printers!

I can see why some people may think the HP does not regularly update drivers and that HP neglects the Mac community. It can be a little confusing to realize that the updated HP drivers are available through Apple Software update and not neccissarily on HP.com.
For future reference you can always get the latest HP Printer Software from teh following Apple KB Article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
As for the Spool Area Full message. This issue really only affect Mac OS 10.6.x and affects all printer drivers. Not just HP. While no one solutions seems to fix it reliably it does seem that any one of the solutions provided in this thread will address it.
1. Reset Print System
3. Install the latest available software from teh KB article listed above
The only relaible solution seem to be to upgrade to Mac OS 10.7 or higher if possible.

Dear Ironbadger,
Thank you for taking the time to reply - it's appreciated. However I decided that I would take a far more reliable route to sorting out the problems with my HP. I contacted the suppliers last night and asked them to arrange to take it back. The spooling problem was just another issue that had come on top of:
1) A completely unworking HP printer delivered. There was no power to it, so after trying to find out what was wrong / if
I was doing something silly, I had to wait in for a second day for a replacement.
And then a thurd day for the broken printer to be collected.
2) The replacement will not print double sided. I have done all the things on this website in relation to this problem and the box that should be on the print page. I asked for help on the forum - as had someone else. We did not get a response.
I did realise from looking for a solution just how many people have this problem with HP, and also how many people have lots of problems with HP generally and the general advice seems to be to avoid HP printers. I wish I had taken this advice when I got the first broken printer.
I contacted the supplier who went through all the steps on this forum, and when I emailed screenshots showing that the relevant box was not there, have called and waited to try to speak to an assistant. I have emailed. I have continued having to print single sided, spending time energy and money whilst HP refuse to either call a customer, or to give a number that they can call on that isn't charged from mobiles.
3) The spooling problems then started yesterday. I wasted a whole load of time trying to sort it - installing and doing everything possible.
I wish I had just given up at the first, second, or third thing that went wrong in the first fortnight of owning it. Instead I have wasted time energy and money, to get back to where I was when I got the first brand new broken HP printer.
I'm writing this in the hope that anyone else affected cuts their losses sooner than I did, and actually believes how unbelievably bad HP printers and customer service practices are.
Like I say, I'm grateful to you for taking the time to respond though.
Best wishes,
Serena
