I am having an issue, I'm not getting the most out these ink cartridges, because I can print at least 12 plain black ink small thin lettering and it's saying it's low on ink. I never use the color ink but it will not just let me change the black must change both. This is very expensive to purchase for $38.00 for the two about every two- three weeks. Looking for a new printer to save some money or just take it to staples and pay 10 cents a copy.

The 61xl cartridges have about 3x the ink of the 61 cartridges. What printer model? Most printers that use the 61 or 61xl cartridges will work with one or the other of the cartridges empty, or in many cases even removed completely. You should not need to replace the color cartridge when the black runs low. You should also be able to continue printing even after the low ink warning until the print quality actually starts to degrade.
