HP Deskjet 2540
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello folks, I never thought configuring a wireless printer will be such a big deal that I will need to post on a forum to get help 🙂

I own a HP Deskjet 2540 printer/scanner - a rarely used device hence I never configured the same, today I needed to scan some documents and thought to configure the printer wirelessly hence this post.

I would like to take community help for following (in no perticular order) -

1. How do I factory reset this device ?

2. How can I disable "Wireless Direct" on this device - somehow the printer is generating a SSID and I dont want it to do the same (please note I do not have printing paper - any solution without printing will be highly appriciated)

3. my main reason for this post  - The printer is able to connect to my Wireless Router when the "Authentication Method" is disabled, somehow the printer is not able to connect over  WPA2-Personal (AES) or WPA2 -Auto-Personal  (AES or TKIP-AES) - need help to understand whats going on ?

PS for #3 - I am using USB cable to connect and update wireless settings for the printer.

Thanking you in advance for reading and replying to my post - Nitin

Hi @nitinonl79,

I see by your post that you are having issues networking the printer with the current  WPA2-Personal (AES) or WPA2 -Auto-Personal  (AES or TKIP-AES) settings, but it will setup when the Authentication Method is disabled. I would be happy to help you.

Factory Restore:

Press the Wireless button and the Cancel button from the printer control panel at the same time, and then hold them for 5 seconds.

To turn off the Wireless Direct:

On the printer Press the button to turn on or off HP wireless direct.

I would suggest to power cycle the router and printer.

Here are some router settings to check:

Make sure there isn't any spaces or special characters in the network name, the printer may not recognize it.

The printer is only capable of sending/receiving in the 2.4 ghz band.

Make sure the router is set for mixed mode for WPA/WPA2.

If it is set to 5 GHZ network you may need to change to 2.4 ghz. (rename the 5 ghz or shut it off)

The WPA key setting needs to be on AES to work correctly not TKIP. You can try the TKIP-AES.

You may need to contact your router company for further assistance to check those settings.

What brand name of router do you have?

How is your network setup? (router, modem/router)

Thank you for your quick reply,

Unfortunately solution to all 3 issues did not work-

1. I switched the printer on and pressed "Wireless" and "Cancel button" at the same time for 5-10 seconds - it did reset my printer back but I am not sure if it did factory reset. I have previosly asked the HP printer setup to assign a static IP, post reset printer is still using same old IP (I have already assigend a new static IP to printer MAC in my router DDNS, however printer is using the same old auto generated static IP) 😞

2. "Wireless Direct" button do not toggle - The white light is constenty on 😞

3.  Still not able to connect to printer when my "Authontification Method" is on (WPA2-Auto-Personal or WPA-Personal with AES) - it does however setup as soon as I disable the same and change it to "Open System".

PS: Here are my router and settings details for problem#3:

ASUS RT-AC51U

Printer is connected to 2.4GHz SSID (Guest Network)

I have added the Printer MAC in 2.4GHZ SSID MAC filter list

Authontification Methord is "WPA2-Auto-Personal"

WPA Encryption is "AES"

Thanks for providing that detailed response @nitinonl79.

Most likely you are having this issue because you are connected to a Guest Network. You would have to connect to the Main Network to get it work properly.

Give it a try and let me know. Thank You. :generic:

Hi @nitinonl79,

I was checking out some of the settings, by looking at the router's manual. Unfortunately we don't support router settings. But I might suggest a couple of things to check. Check the Mac Filtering setting to see if it is on 2.4 and the frequency settings. Try the setup without Mac Filtering or change the Encryption to WEP to see if that may help.

Other then that, you may want to contact the router company to see if they can further assist you.

Here is the manual Dual-band Wireless-AC750 Router.

Please let me know the outcome. Thank You. :generic:

Thanks I will check with my router provide for problem #3, However #1 and #2 are purely related to printer and does not involve anything else? Do you have any recommended alternates that I can try?

Thank you again for the quick replies to my queries.
