Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion “g6” series laptop using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with a wireless connection at home.  I’ve read there is a “Wake-on LAN” feature, and want to make sure that it is (disabled).  From what I’ve read, it must be disabled in the BIOS (and) in the OS.  However, when I enter the BIOS from F2, (HP Advanced System Diagnostics, ver. 4.1.0.0)  there is a menu option displayed, but no options from which to change this “Wake-on LAN” feature. In fact, it isn't even mentioned.

The best I’ve been able to accomplish so far is by going to the Control Panel, System, Device Manager, and then to “Ralink RT5390 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter Properties,” then selecting the “Power Management” tab and clearing the check mark from the “Allow this device to wake the computer.”

I’ve also gone to the “Realtek PCIe Family Controller Properties”, and unchecked the “Allow this device to wake the computer.”

Finally, I’ve also gone to Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/System, and from the “Remote” tab of System Properties, unchecked the “Remote Assistance” option, and under Remote Desktop on the same tab, selected the “Don’t allow connections to this computer” radio button.

The questions are:  1) have I done everything possible to (prevent) any unauthorized remote access, and, 2) should I be concerned about this “wake-on-LAN” feature if it doesn’t seem to be present in my BIOS?

Thanks, Terry

Hello again Terry57.

Sorry for the delay in my response.  I have been out of the office.

That does indeed sound like the feature that you were looking for.  I had never, before now, heard of it called anything else.

Make sure to disable the feature within the operating system as well as per these instructions.

Have a wonderful day!

Hello Terry57.  I understand you're trying to disable Wake-on-LAN.

Most consumer models don't have this feature.  It is most common on Enterprise products.  What is the product number of your notebook?  This document covers how to locate the product number.  I will use this information to confirm whether the feature is available.

Have a lovely day!

Hi AttackofZaq,

I think my problem was that I pressed F2 on startup and should have pressed F10.  Using F10, I did disable a feature called "Internal Network Adapter Boot," which may be what I was looking for.

I did identify the exact model number and product number.  The model is a "HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC."  The product number is "A2F4EAV."

Thanks for providing the link in your reply.  Any info you can provide will be appreciated!

Thanks, Terry

Hi AttackofZaq,

I checked out your attached article, and followed the instructions. I found that all of the things listed I had done, except to "disable on Magic Packet." That was on, so I disabled it.

Thank-you very much for all the help and information, and have a great day!
