HP 3634 printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

About 4 hours into managing a day long community event for which a smooth printing was essential, my printer just stopped printing, dead cold, no errors, nothing.  I did start to get errors after I tried various things.  I have more than a few IT skills, just no time to really spend on it, and definitely no luxury for concentrated analysis, so I just had to find other very painful work-arounds, all in front of a critical customer.  This is not a high dollar operation, but printing ought to be no problem, right?  Just now, I'm checking the forensics.  I got a driver update at the critical time.  I know at various times I have turned off and on various Windows updates to not be interrupted at such times.  I don't know that this really works.  My questions are 1) How do I prevent this? 2) Is it normal to get an update like that at noon on Saturday?  3) Where do I get started with my consideration to upgrade to a more solid high speed printing operation that a colunteer home user can afford?

@JPHyltin,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are wanted to know how to turn off the automatic HP printer driver updates and also how the install the required updates to improve the performance of the printer.

You may turn off automatic printer driver updated from HP Support Assistant by selecting the option "Check for updates, but let me choose when updates to download and install."

And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Using HP Support Assistant

Note: Check the steps under the sublink "Changing HP software updated settings"

To improve the performance of the printer, you need to update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update

You have a good day ahead.
