laserjet p1005
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello sir/madam,

I have been getting message usb device malfuntioned whenever i connect my laserjet p1005 printer.

I have tried using different usb ports and using different cables.

I have also tried using it on another laptop with windows 7 but same issue.

i have also tried uninstalling the driver, restarting and then reinstalling but still same issue.

Any clue if its time to get a new printer or can it be fixed.

Any way of resetting the printer maybe?

Thanks in advance.

Hello @zul1,

This is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that the USB isn't being recognized. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a powered hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation. I have seen where this model isn't detected if it isn't connected directly to a wall outlet.

Please try the steps listed in this document: 'Device setup failed to complete' or 'Unknown device' Message Displays in Windows during USB Install...

Let me know if and how the printer name was listed in the Device Manager. If it is listed as 'Unknown Device', right click and uninstall it. Then disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to see if it will install the driver automatically.

You can click on the "Accept as Solution" if the issue is  resolved and the "Thumbs Up" for my effort. Please keep me posted. Good Luck!

Thank you very much for a very well detailed guide to solve the issue, but to no avail.

I tried all possible solutions but comes doen to same error.

Different USb ports, different USb cables , uninstalling and reinstalling .Still same error.

I am sending you screenshots if that helps.

Finally a bit shout out to your efforts and any further help will be appreciated.

Thanks so much for providing the screen shots @zul1.

It may be the USB port on the printer since two computers aren't recognizing the printer.

Just to rule any other hardware issues with the printer, perform the hardware self-test by opening and closing the lid quickly 5 times. It should print out a paper with black lines on it.

But I would try the following just to rule that out on the Windows 7 computer again, just to make sure it isn't a driver issue using Windows 10:

Check the power management on the computer to see if that is causing the issue. Go to the Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, for each USB root hub, right click and left click on Properties, for power management remove the check mark for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". It allows the computer to limit or turn off power for this device.

Remove the Unknown Device again from Devices and Printers

.

Disconnect the USB cable.

Perform a clean boot on the computer and try reinstalling the printer again: How to perform a clean boot.

Thanks!

Thanks alot for your help and support.

Hardware self test works fine and prints off black lines on paper.

However the usb malfuntion is still not resolved.

I suppose its the USB port then?

Time to move on and get a new hp printer.
