Still have no way to scan to windows 8 from my HP Officejet 6500 E709n. Amazing that the E710n is in the list but I cannot get Windows to recognize this printer is also a scanner and fax. Very dissapointing.

Hi-
We are working on a release that gives (limited) support for older devices with this app. You would be able to do flatbed scans, 300 dpi. I don't have any specifics on release date, but it is actively in progress.
In the time being, you can always download the Windows 8 desktop solution for your device and scan that way. I checked and it is available out on HP's support page. This assumes, of course, you're not running on WinRT device (ARM based).

When I try to download the desktop version it runs and finds my printer but then tells me to install using control panel>printers and devices. But it never recognizes the scanner. Printer works fine. Scanner and fax, no deal.
Trying now to go the other direction and have the scanner find my computer. Maybe I can scan from the front panel of the printer. Sort of old fashioned though considering technology is supposed to be getting better and with plug and play I thought backward compatibility was a must.

Actually that does remind me that there was a workaround posted for this. You can access the embedded web server in your device and do a scan that way. It's a crude workaround but should enable you to scan for now ....

Thanks, I used to be an HP employee as well. In my opinion they still make the best laptops. And I love this little printer. It did everything and never breaks or jams. Too bad they there isn't support for longevity anymore the answer always seems to be throw it out and buy a new one.
I'm also going to try connecting using USB and see if I have different results.

Okay, no still no luck with the scan and capture app. However, Windows Fax and Scan now recognizes the scanner and I can scan at any resolution supported by the device.
Thanks for the help and I will keep the app installed and frequently check it for updates.
So I guess for those still having problems, connect a USB cable and you will still be able to scan.

Interesting to know that USB got you working with Windows Fax & Scan. That means the WIA drivers are working. Network should work in a similar fashion, hmmmm...
Yes, keep an eye out for updates on our Capture app. Eventually we'll get those older devices supported 🙂
USB will not work anytime soon with Capture app... MS has severely crippled our ability to communcate over USB in the existing Metro framework. Hopefully that will change in future OS updates. So for now, Capture app is a network only application.

With the HP scan program I am running into the same problem. I printed up a network self test configuration and tried finding the printer manually and I still got the message say no device found. So far I have used the Windows Fax and Scan, HP Scan & Capture, and the WIA work aroud as mentioned. The work around pulls up just fine; however the scan tab is not even there.

All-
We just released an update to HP Scan and Capture to address a few minor bugs (one of which was posted by Matro). This update should fix the problem where HP Scan and Capture is able to see your device, but hangs during scanning and leaves your device in a bad state.
