Yes, Windows Scan works but does not handle multi-page scans or PDF output. I will wait for the update from HP. Thanks for your help.

Good to know... we do hope to have something in December, probably mid-December so keep an eye out for it!

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 9600. When I try to use HP Capture and Scan is says 'connecting' and then I get "Device Cannot Be Found". It's connected via USB and also connected to WiFi network. I have attached the hpcapture.log file as already suggested.

Don't know how to attach file so I pasted log file here.

Hi Kajo-

I am not aware of an Officejet Pro 9600.  Perhaps you meant 8600?

Have you installed the HP drivers and software for desktop?   If so, are you able to scan using the desktop solution?

It looks as if something is blocking the communication to the device.   I presume HP Capture is able to see your device on the network so that you can select it.    But then when HP Capture attempts to query it, it times out after about 10 seconds.   I suspect possibly some security/firewall software could be blocking it.   Have you installed any 3rd party firewall or internet security software?    If so, you might try disabling it to see if things work better.

I used the HP doctor stuff and that cured my problem. I had loaded Win/8.1 and I think that caused the problem. Once I ran the Doctor stuff I guess it gave me updated drivers. Not sure what it actually did but everything worked. Thanks anyway for the response.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Samsung laptop; my printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. For some reason, HP Scan and Capture can't find my printer. It works for printing; it works for scanning with the other, less full featured scan software that seems to be part of Windows. But HP Scan and Capture (which I was using fine until I upgraded from 8 to 8.1) now cannot find my printer. Any suggestions?

Hi trhummer,

I assume you have your scanner connected via Network or wireless, correct?     Have you tried using the Manual Search option under Select Device, and typing in the IP address of your 8600?   Not that you should have to do this, but just curious if that makes a difference.

If that doesn't help, if you don't mind, can you capture an application log for me?   To do so, first shut down HP Scan and Capture.   Then go to your Pictures folder, and create a text file called "HPCapture.log".   Make sure that it creates a file with this extension and not hpcapture.log.txt.

Now run the app and try to find your scanner.     Copy the log file (first verify that it put content into it), and attach it to this thread.

Thanks

Jeremy

Entering the IP address sorted out the problem. I would have done that earlier, but I didn't think I knew the IP address: could not find it on the computer. Then it occurred to me that I have a smart printer, and should ask the PRINTER. Which I did, and the information was readily available there.

This does not answer the question why the software could not find the printer seamlessly in the first place, but all's well that ends well. Thanks.

Hi trhummer,

I might be able to figure out why it didn't just work in the first place if you are able to capture an app log for me.   At least it's worth a shot...

Did you happen to install any firewall or internet security SW?

HP Scan and Capture uses multicast WS-Discovery to find devices on your network.   If something (e.g. firewall) is blocking those, it would prevent us from discovering the device.   Manual search uses unicast directed discovery.

As an aside, HP will be releasing an updated 8.1 version of the HP Scan and Capture app probably sometime in January.  The new version will take advantage of the new Windows 8.1 Scan Runtime API which will allow the app to talk to any installed scanning device, over USB or Network.

I have attempted to download and run the full printer software for over a month, following the instructions for windows 8 64 bit (verified as my system.   After the extract box hits 99%, the install does not start.  I ran the compatability check on the downloaded file and the result is windows XP 3 service pack 3.  I have tried to save file, run file, save and run, and nothing happens after the extraction which tells me whatever downloads is not for windows 8.  I question what is downloading?  why does the compatabiltiy check not say windows 8 or 8.1?  I am at a point that I am going to install windows 7 so I can use the scanner feature.
