I'm trying to install a LaserJet 1022 on a new computer -- Lenovo E420 running Windows 7, 64 bit.  I've downloaded the driver installer.  When I run it, it says "preinstalling the driver files".  Then it tells me to connect the printer via the USB port.  When I connect the USB cable, the computer makes the "duh-DUH" sound indicating that a USB device has been connected.  However, the driver installer says "Waiting for user to connect the device".  Nothing more happens.  How can I get it to finish the driver installation?

Firewall may be blocking the installation...

what security software are you using?

I'm having the exact same problem with my HP color laser jet 1600 printer. It just gets hung up there. I tried turning off norton antivirus and it didn't help. I have the same antivirus program on my other computer and there's no issue.

How would I specifically find out if it's something to do with my firewall?

I posted my question separately and have gotten no replies and the troubleshooting programs are of no help (one assumes I have my printer hooked up toa  network, which I don't and one also can't detect my printer to troubleshoot it). This is a very frustrating issue.

I am having the same problem with HP Laserjet 1022 on multiple machines.  My workaround is to install the printer via tha add printer wizard first with the local driver on the computer. After it is installed like that, the driver installation from HP website works and doesn't ask me to connect the printer anymore.

It's not the firewall so much as windows 7 trying to be 'helpful' - I'm trying to perform the same installation as above however the HP driver keeps waiting for the printer to be connected for the first time (read connected as an uninstalled device) however, when plugged in, the Win7 OS decides to allocate it as a USB Supported printing device but listing it as a 'Other Device' so the HP driver doesnt detect it and windows doesnt have it installed properly to allow us to use it.

If you go into the device manager, you should be able to see this in something similar to

Normally you'd be able to right click and uninstall this instance of the hardware and the installer would pick up the printer but due to Win7's helpfullness, it nigh on instantly reinstalls as the above.

The result a stalemate.

Unfortunately the only drivers seem to be ones that don't just give you the driver files somewhere to manually install with so I'm going to try and rip them out of the temp location it extracts to when you start the installer (generally the temp folder within your user/profile folders).

Will let you know how this goes....

So using the files created in the temporary folders did not work for manually installing hp 1022n locally.

I then went around tried to install as many different 64 bit drivers as I could and sucess hit with the windows xp x64 drivers -

The ones listed as "HP LaserJet Host Based Print Driver Package" (the non plug and play ones!) actually deposit a bunch of driver files (default directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\LaserJet 1020_1022 Drivers) and then you can go from device manager or divices and printers and update the driver using the manual options to that folder and you should be okay.

elwagner, have you tried some of the other drivers for you hp 1600?

If you're running a 64bit system too, try the vista 64 bit drivers on this page

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=1140729&...

listed as HP Color LaserJet 1600 Print Driver Package

Dont forget, firewall software is only for communication to & from the internet. Generally a local driver instllation doesn't do this, something like mcafee which uses resident software or locally running agents, could potentially block driver installs depending on how they are configured.

I also had the problem where the install stopped waiting for printer connection.

Here's the solution if you're trying to install from the HP CD.

First (though not entirely sure it's needed), remove the printer (control panel->devices and printers) and uninstall the hp stuff (the CD will have an uninstall.exe program).

Then set up your PC so that it does not automatically install drivers. See this page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2500967

Now you can do the install. When the setup prompts you to connect the printer, do so. It takes a short while before the setup notices the connection, so be patient.

Once the connection is recognized, proceed with the rest of the connection.

The key is to not do automatic driver installation as it seems to interfere with HP's own installer. Probably you want to reset the "automatically install drivers" after the printer is set up.

Hi, thanks for the info.

I followed the steps. But still the same - kept asking me to connect.

I got on the phone with HP, and was put on hold for over one hour now; the "estimated time is 10 minutes" but still waiting..
