On my excursions with the 3050, I noticed a port with the description "HP network re-discovery port monitor", named CN****HX. (this odd name is the serial number of the printer, I discovered)

My assumption is that somehow, this is what re-assigns IP for the device.

 

I want to set a static IP for my printer, so that it is predictable on several machines using it across a wireless network, at different times - rather than a new IP being allocated from time to time as one or other computer comes online or shuts down.

 

Using the Devices and Printers CP applet, Print Server Properties, I can't delete this port. On diferent computers, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, I have the same port when I have installed the HP Deskjet 3050 (in both cases, without sharing, and as devices on the same wireless network).

 

Is it necessary?

I'd like to help shed a little light on your questions about the HP Network Rediscovery Port Monitor.

 

Generally, when you install an HP printer over a wireless connection, the software will automatically set the printer up on an HP Network Rediscovery Port. Basically this port is linked to the monitor so that it will sweep the network for your printr before sending out a print job (just incase the printer's IP address changes). Depending on your network this can be really helpful so that you're not having to reconfigure your printer any time your restart your router.

 

The Discovery Port Monitor is the portion of the software that actually searches the network for your printer. If you are planning on setting a manual IP address for you printer, and setting a Manual TCP/IP port to print directly to that IP address then you probably don't need that service running.

My question above is probably of no practical importance, except that it seems to be a port allocation that one shouldn't try to remove and shouldn't get concerned about.

I'll probably not get an answer here, but that's OK.

Thanks HeyListen - I had a suspicion that it was there for that purpose, and given an unorthodox name that made it resistant to deletion by nosy users like me.

 And it works, obviously, in the manner that you have described.

I am using an HP Envy 5530 printer which seems to print and scan OK. When I look at the port in the printer properties, I can see the port name which is in fact the serial number of the printer, and the description "HP network re-discovery port monitor". But When I click on the "Configure port

@ddruelle - i think you were going to write - that Windows wouldn't let you make any changes. Correct?

 

This is consistent with the answer provided, above (it can't be changed or deleted - it is used by the HP printer ecosystem to make wireless connection easier).

Oups I clicked on Post ! The end of my message is: "But when I click on the "Configure port" button, I have an error message 0x00000003 saying there is an error during port configuration. Could you please help me understand what is wrong with the port ? I ran several print and scan tests with the printer and everything looks fine. Thank you for your help.

@ddruelle, so do you want to input a fixed / particular IP address for your printer?

If so, I think you use the same method as I did, my question (solved 1-2 days ago) with topic containing "Static".

I don't know your printer, but it may have a small screen which allows you to see its current IP address. This allows you to type that IP (eg, 10.1.1.7) into a browser, as http://10.1.1.7 and change the IP to what you want.

Thank you for following up. At the present time, I don't intend to change the IP adress that shows up on the small screen of my printer. The only question is that I have is why do I have an error message when I click on the "Configure port" button on the ports tab of my printer properties. The port shows HP network re-discovery port monitor with the serial number of my printer as the port, and my printer seems to work fine.
