Welcome to the HP Community --

HP Smart is not required to print to the printer from your mobile device.

That said, I believe you do need an application to translate your desire to put content on paper.

That application must be able to connect to the printer.

I could be wrong -- I've had my phone for a few weeks -- There might be phone magic that supports "Print and Done" without having done any pre-work.

??

What to do / try / consider

iOS includes a built-in Print feature -- you do need be able to select and identify the printer (on the same network) as the device to accept the print commands.

This implies that the printer is available to your iPhone - that is, the printer is connected to the network - your iPhone can detect the printer on the network.

Assuming the printer is indeed on the network, iOS can generally add the printer to its list of known devices.  See your Airprint instructions to add a printer.

Next,

The printer must be able to translate the content you are sending to it --

For example...

If you click on Print, for example, on your device (iPhone), there are some assumptions made -

The first of these might be that you are using an application to open, view, and identify the content.

The printer is not part of opening and viewing content until you use an application to configure the content into something the printer understands.

General Example - Printer - Mobile - iOS - Print app- Photo Print
