I try to find a driver for my reliable and fantastic HP Laserjet 4L printer. It worked fine until Windows7 but now with Windows10 I can't find any driver that will do the job. I have tried the driver for Laserjet 6L but the testprint is horrible. On the HP site the 4L drivers don't show any possiblities for Windows10. I use the LPT to USB converter.
Can please anybody help?

Hi:
The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the 2nd driver listed at the link below. Goes up to W8.1.

According to this support document: the LaserJet 4L is supported on Windows 10 via a Windows Update driver.
You may have to use the Windows Update button on the Add Printer dialogue to invoke downloading of the relevant driver.

Hi Dansdaduk,
I'm very pleased with your fast and friendly support, but I feel very stupied... That document and the listing of the 4L have I find also, but as you see there are N/A and minusbuttons. When I click on the 'Windows update' link I get another document and not a downloadable driver nor Windows-update. I have desperately clicked in circles and in the end I said something I can't quote 🙂
So please, where can I just download this Windows10 driver for HP Laserjet 4L? Why isn't there a clear downloadlist on the HP webpages? Thank you in advance

Thank you very much! I almost thought that I was at the finish! I downloaded the .cab file, copied it to c:\temp, started CMD with Ctrl+Shift+Enter in Admin-mode, typed dism /online/ add-package /packagepath:"C:\temp\<the long filename>.cab" but I got (translated to English) 'the system can not find the file'..... I copied the long filename to prevent mistakes.
I'm not very used to this kind of work: what I'm doing wrong????
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"C:\update\cabname.cab"

You're very welcome.
Here's what I would try...
Download and save the cabinet file but don't do anything with it.
Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
After you install 7-Zip, right click on the cab file you downloaded and saved.
Have 7-Zip extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name.
Then use your add printer wizard and select the laser jet 4L printer from the list and click on Have Disk.
Then browse to the cabinet file you unzipped and hopefully the driver will install. The setup information file labeled prnhp001 has the driver for your printer.

I've no idea what . cab file you have, or where you got it, nor what it's for, so can't comment on that.
When I mentioned the 'Add Printer' dialogue, I meant the one that you get to (via several screens) by clicking the 'Add a printer' link in the 'Control Panel | Printers and ...' applet on your Windows workstation.
On this dialogue is a 'Windows Update' button which will initiate downloading of a number of additional drivers from Microsoft, including (theoretically) one for the LJ 4L.
Once this driver is available , you should be able to select it to use with your printer (provided that your USB-to-parallel converter is one that works with Windows 10).
I only on a phone at present, not my PC, so I can't illustrate this reply with images of the dialogues that I'm referring to, sorry.

Hi Paul,
I was away for some days, so excuse me for the delay.
I have done what you suggested: add printer, choose manually, choose for existing port USB002 (virtual printerport), browse to prnhp001.inf and then I had to click to get a testprint. Nothing happend. The LPT-connection of my HP 4L goes to a USB-converter, so the choice of a virtual printerport USB002 seems logically for me. Have I made a wrong choice along the way? I felt so close to a solution and happiness 🙂
Best regards
Kees

Hi:
Sorry that didn't work for you.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about how to set up HP printers.
My printers are not HP and they are all wireless.
But I too once had an old HP 4L printer at work, but it was connected with a parallel cable directly to the PC.
I'm not sure if W10 doesn't like the USB converter connection or what.
