When I check the status of my printer, the printer asks to enter SSID. I don't even know what that means. Please help me!
Ps. I can print still if I plug the printer into my laptop, but I should be able to do it wirelessly, that's why I bought this printer. And I can't plug into my ipad.

Hi Kgirl000,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I see that you would like to print wirelessly to your Envy 4500 printer.
When using the Wireless Direct network, you need to connect the devices to the network the printer is broadcasting to be able to print. I have included the description of what HP Wireless Direct is from the
HP’s Wireless Printing Center.
HP wireless direct is a new feature that allows your Wi-Fi capable devices (for example: smart phones, tablets, or computers) to make a wireless network connection directly to your printer without using a wireless router or access point. You connect to your printer’s HP wireless direct signal the same way you connect your Wi-Fi capable device to a new wireless network or hotspot.
I suspect that is not what you are trying to accomplish. Let’s start by connecting your printer to your wireless network. This can be easily accomplished from the front panel of the printer. The steps can be found on page 53 of your User Guide in the section titled “To connect the printer”. You will need to know the name of your wireless network (that is the SSID) and the password to your wireless network.
To switch your laptop from a USB cable connection to a wireless connection I have included the Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection document. It has a different section for each of the operating systems. Within each of those sections is the instructions to switch to a wireless connection. Please click on your operating system and follow the instructions.
You should now have no issues printing from your mobile devices when they are connected the same wireless network the printer is connected to.
Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Kgirl000,
Thank you for the update, I truly appreciate it.
I have included the Printing with HP Wireless Direct document. It will help you with printing using the wireless direct feature. Please remember to connect your devices to the network the printer is broadcasting, which will begin with something like ‘HP-Print’.
Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Kgirl000,
Thank you for the update.
Based on your post, I wonder if the Wireless Direct feature is currently turned off on your printer. On page 56 of your User Guide, it walks you through how to turn on the wireless direct. The title of the section is “To connect wirelessly to the printer without a router”. For reference, on page 17 it also has a section titled “Print from a wireless-capable mobile device”.
Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Kgirl000,
If the printer is not connected to a wireless network it will blink. You’ve indicated that a wireless network is not available where you are so it will blink.
Were you able to check the User Guide for the steps to find the name of the wireless direct network? Does your iPad see that network? If it sees the Wireless Direct network, will the iPad connect to it?
Thanks.

I am withdrawing my post msg.
I succeeded finally, with the directions of
I installed again the printer, but only as WiFi Direct after having switched of my wifi router. It worked. Then to configure also the use with the normal wifi network, I used the EWS / Utilities / Update IP address and put the original IP of the printer, when it worked on the network. Good, it works. Please note that, in control panel, you do not see two network printers (one direct and the other "normal"), as I thought, but only one. You see two printers if you launch "Print & Scan Doctor" by HP; note they have two different IP.
You can not pass from direct to normal network and viceversa at one touch, but you always have to update the IP address of the printer on the PC, via the EWS or via the Doctor/Fix (which I think does the same thing to fix it). Stop, I give out: it is not an everyday tool, for me. I will use wifi-direct printing only on contingency, should my router stop working.
