Black ink suddenly not printing although color ink prints fine. Will not print black using computer or only the printer.   Have tried replacing black ink cartridge, auomatically and manually cleaning the printhead, aligning cartridges, uninstalling and reinstalling printer software.  Printer purchased in U.S. Nov. 2010.        Is my only option to buy a new printhead?

Hi @PG33,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I understand you are having printing issues on your HP OfficeJet printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this,

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a Hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridge and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Officejet 6500 Printers - Color or Black Ink Not Printing, or the Printed Page is Blank or Prints with Little Ink - Click here

Since you have already tried with two different sets of cartridges and if it fails to print black, I would suggest this to be a printer hardware as the printhead in this printer is non-removable. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for available for further assistance. Please fill in the product details to get the tech support number.

Hi  @PG33,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand you have tried performing a hard reset on the printer and still you are having issues with the printer not printing black ink.

Since you have already tried cleaning the printhead, cleaning the cartridges as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software and still having the same issue, I would suggest this to be a printer hardware. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for available service options. Please fill in the product details to get the tech support number.
