Hello sawhorse,
Here is some information on receiving a fax automatically with a telephone answering machine (TAM)
-
The Auto Answer setting should be set to On.
-
Connect the TAM either to the 2-EXT port on the back of the HP Officejet, or to another wall jack on the same line.
-
Set the Rings to Answer setting on the HP Officejet to 6.Set the TAM to answer in 4 rings. The TAM will answer the line first and the HP Officejet will listen for fax tones. If fax tones are detected, the HP Officejet will take the call.
-
Press Setup .
-
Press 3, and then press 4.
-
Press the Right Arrow to the desired number of rings. (In your case is 6).
-
Press OK.

Hello MargieB,
So I could assist you with changing the IP address of your printer, would you be able to provide me with the model/product number of the printer?
Looking forward to your response.
Thank you,

As per your request, my new HP printer is a HP8600 Premium. The printer will print fine using a USB cable, and it will also work fine using my laptop which I also set up wireless. Don't know what I did differently with my laptop vs my desk top?
Desktop computer is a HPCompaq and is several years old.

Hello MargieB,
Does your HP Compaq desktop have a wireless card installed or do you have an Ethernet connection to the router/modem? Do you know if you have either a modem and a router or is it a two-in-one? (Any model numbers will help if you're unsure).
Thank you,

@ShlomiL wrote:169.254 address mean the printer does not have a DHCP address from your router, and it will not be accessible as the PC have another subnet mask provided by the router.
In order to resolve the problem, reset the wireless settings and then reconfigure it to the network:
Click Start > Programs > HP > HP Photosmart B209 Series > Reconfigure Wireless connection and follow the steps.
If you unable to complete the configuration, please clarify your operating system so i may offer any further steps according.
