@michaelmas42, Thanks for your generous response and time.

 

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

 

Uninstall the printer software from your PC and Try installing the drivers using Windows Built-in Print Driver and check if it helps.

 

Refer this link to know how to install drivers using Windows Built-in Print Driver.

 

If the issue still persists it is a hardware issue, please contact HP support for service options.

Have done this already before asking for help to no avail. The printer switches on OK but no flashing lights, buttons inoperative, has disappeared from HP solution centre etc.  so it looks like the "hammer" solution is the next option and saying goodbye to the D2660.
