I was able tyo load plain paper as the printer was turned off for an hour and half.

After printing one page, it stopped giving error 86:01 and would not go anywhere but telling me to clear the paper path.

I stopped it, pulled out the cutter and manually cut the paper.

I unloaded the paper and pulled the cutter to the center of the paper path, and re-cleaned the carriage rail all the way to the end on the cutter (left) side (hadn't thought of it the first time).

Waiting for the printer to restart to see if the error is gone so I have access to the menu, and I will follow your suggestion, and turn off the cutter to see if that makes the difference.

Thanks very much for your help.

Also clean & lubricate the silver metal rod with synthetic oil. very important.

Cutter is good & do not remove it. make sure printer engage it & cut nicely. no fun to cut paper

manually & edge id uneven.  for testing ok.

It is good to learn how to repair & maintent your own printer & you save lots of $$$ & time.

That was how I started to change belt for my DJ500 around year 2000 & took me 2 weeks.

slowly I did better & better.

Now I do not use dj500 anymore, but only Z3200, Z3100. I can repair these without any trouble.

I fixed 5 total & keep all for my own uses.

Thanks, jasonmiamifl,

I did clean & lubricate the carriage rail.

I turned the printer off for the weekend, so Monday morning I will clean (again) the encoder strip, with just water and a lint-free cloth. (per your last post)

and, if it still throws an error, I will diable the cutter.

Thanks,

Still getting the same 86:01 error code after cleaning the encoder strip (with plain water & lint-free cloth)

Got ahold of service manual, they list error code 86:01 and recommend checking the  Scan-Axis usage via Printer Information in the Utility Tests menu.

They said if the Scan-Axis usge is close to or over 100%, the scan-axis motor  was the problem (needed replacement)

On my printer, the Scan-Axis Usage is 5%

Performed the Carriage Movement Test:

PWM: 105  std deviation: 4  (I cannot find out what PWM stands for)

Speed Offset:  ips: 0  std deviation: 0

Stabilization Distance:  45 mm

I tried to perform (on the suggestion of the manual) the Paper Advancement Test, but when I loaded the paper, it brought me back to the 86:01 error code from which I cannot exit without powering down the printer.

Just flashing over my mind.

try dj500 PCL driver.........

Download it & unzip to a folder.   go to printer property  & use new driver...  point to the folder where you saved the file.

try it, nothing to loose

Cannot get past the error screen.

When I shut down the printer (unplug) and retart, it runs thru the initialization, and the carraiage travels the full path, and inariably lets out a squeak at about 30 inches and again at 40 inches, both on the trip out(right to left) and the return trip.

I've seen no paper jam (there is no paper loaded) and cleaned the encoder strip and the carriage rod.

The error code tells me to adjust the printheads but I cannot escape the error message to do so.

Further reading in the service manual says an error 86:01 could mean a bad scan-axis motor.  At one point I was able to start up and not get the error message. At that point I ran as many utility tests as I could before the error popped up again.

The scan-axis motor is at 27% (They say replace if it is at 100% or higher)

Retarted the printer, with paper loaded. Got the same error.

Pressed the Menu buttonand this message appeared:

System Error

Severe error: 0x8010001

task: interrupt

file: carmotor.c

line: 2403

if you look at the left side of encorder strip, make sure the screw was secured to the right hole  ?

check the right side of the encorder strip & make sure it fited to the spot perfectly ???   prime suspect
