Deskjet 5650
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I recently replaced the ink cartridges in my printer. Now I cannot print anything.

I've downloaded & run HP Print and Scan Doctor - it says all is well & to try printing a test page. It tries; paper is pulled from the tray, but then nothing happens.

I've downloaded & run HP Printer Install Wizard - I get similar results when it tries to print a test page.

I've checked USB cable - it's OK.

I've removed power cord & re-powered.

I've powered-off & back on with button on front.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi FatSam,

Are you getting any error message on your printer?  Are any of the lights blinking or does it have a steady green light and appear to be ready to print?

Please let me know if it seems to be in an error state.

I think we should focus on getting the printer to print a self-test page from the printer itself - stand alone.

Print a self-test page

Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
  1. Load plain paper in the paper tray.
  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  3. Press and hold the Power button ().
  4. Press the Resume button () four times. The self-test page prints.

Let me know if you are able to do this?

The self-test solution doesn't work either. When I initiate the process the following happens: The print heads move all the way to the left, paper is pulled in from the tray, then it pauses, then the print heads move to the middle, another pause, then the print heads move all the way to the right. The resume light comes on when the print heads are in the middle. The power button starts flashing then, too. When I power off the printer the paper is ejected, before shutting down. When I power back-on there are no flashing lights.

Hi FatSam,

Thanks for the update.

Here is a document that describes several blinking light situations:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-deskjet-5650-printer-series/304441/document/c00013363

I recommend following the instructions for a blinking resume light and power light.

Follow Step four where it describes disconnecting the power cord from the printer when the carriage comes to the center.  Make sure the carriage can move freely by manually moving it.

I would also remove and re-insert the ink cartridges.

Plug the unit directly into a wall outlet when you turn it back on - and try the stand alone self test again.

If these steps fail to recover the printer it may need to be repaired.  You can contact HP Customer Support to see what your options are.  Is the printer in warranty?

Hi FatSam,

Do you still have the old cartridges?
Can you put them back in and see if the printer will go through the motions of printing the self-test page without having blinking lights?

You might try replacing the ink cartridges if that test with the old ones works.

You printer is fairly old and may need to be replaced.  I know of no other troubleshooting than what I have provided.

I don't have the old cartridges. I'm going to replace the printer. It was a good one while it lasted. Thanks for your assistance.
