Why was the x476 and x576 using 971 ink discontinued so fast, and replaced with x477 and x577 with 972 ink?

The x476dw and x576dw printers were introduced in 2013.  Four years is actually a rather long product sales life for technology items. 

 

The 971 ink cartridges are still available, I would expect them to remain available for decades to come, based on previous history.

To be fair they've been discontinuted sometime between the end of 2015 and early 2016.  The software hasn't been updated since 2014 .
