To make a booklet, printed both side of the sheet in landscape is not possiblel if the paper is custom size, like one half of a legal size-- 7" x 8.5". Even the listed paper size Statement 5.5x 8.5 will not print dupex, either portait or landscape. My office jet 8600 would print statements duplex portrait. The 8720 will not. I am very disappointed by this limitation of the printer that is supposedly newer, improved.  Is there a solution other than having to run the odd size pages first and then run the even side and pray that they will feed properly?

Hello, @Muginn - Greetings!

Thanks for engaging in the HP Forums! I see by your post that you are experiencing issues while doing 2-sided printing on your Officejet 8720 printer. I will certainly do my best to help you 🙂

I understand that the printer is not doing duplex printing in landscape mode with the custom paper size. I have not tried this myself, but ideally, it should work. Please let me know the following details:

1) Can the printer print 2-sided document in landscape mode while using a regular paper size like A4?

2) If you use the portrait mode, will it make a proper 2-sided document with the custom paper size?

3) Also, try a different customer paper size and check.

While awaiting your reply, try these steps:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)

Now, follow http://hp.care/2pu1NBY and create new customer paper size and try printing 2-sided document.

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

there is no problem doing duplex printing on letter or legal size paper. I tried both landscape and portait for the custom size which is 7" x 8.5" (half a legal)  which got the message that it would not work and wanted to rescale for letter size. I tried the same with the listed "statement" size paper, which is 5.5 x 8.5.  I tried you suggestion to reset the printer but the form on my Mac did not spresent an empty printer space. As well, I was nervous about getting that process screwed up. At 92 years of age I am cautious about making system changes.OK?  I appreciate you dealing with this problem.  Incidentaly, I did try the two pass throughs, first the odd pages followed by the even. With 12 pages I worked fine, even when the ink on the graphics was still a bit wet, which I was concerned about giving a pro blem with feeding the second pass through. But, it is not as good a solution if one is going to produce multiple copies of a booklet.

Hello, @Muginn

So, the printer works with all other settings except this specific option?

Also, if you are getting a specific message that said it will not work with the specific settings, then I'm afraid it will not be supported. It could be the hardware limitation of this model printer.

Visit us again if you have any concerns! Thank you!

Good luck 🙂
