This is the correct way to do the upgrade:
In the "Device Manager" list (Windows key+ Pause break key>View advanced system settings>Hardware Tab>Device Manager) under "Printers" there are two printers, first "HP Deskjet 5520 series" and a second one "Unknown"
Try "Updating the driver" for the Unknown printer device. You are presented with a list of HP printer driver options (from your PC) to install. Choose the NULL PRINT driver since that was what the Windows update is failing on. After installing the driver for the NULL device, the unknown device is removed from the printer device list and moved to the USB controller section. No more error update. 🙂

I just recently reinstalled the drivers for my HP Photosmart 7520 on my wife's laptop, which is now running Windows 10, and I had absolutely no problems with it. However, I have been having nothing but trouble trying to load it to my desktop, which is running Vista. I had a vague recollection of having gone through this problem a few years ago, and being told to just ignore it. I am glad to see that someone posted, in this support column, that this is an "old" driver that is no longer being used.
