OFFICE jET pRO 8710
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

message that blue and yellow needed replacing. Showed black was half full and red was quarter full. Replaced blue and yelllow, then told red needed replaceing. Replaced red. Then it said black needed replacing. At each step it would not let me print. Went to Best Buy where we purchased the printer and told the sensor for ink level must not be working properly and to return the printer for replacement. Want confirmation that this is the right solution before turning in printer that otherwise has been working fine.

Did you install the cyan and yellow cartridges at the same time? Was the ink message a warning that one or more cartridges was low, or did it indicate that one or more of the cartridges were depleted?  "Low" is a warning to give you time to get a replacement cartridge to have on hand.  This is based on an estimate made by counting the number of droplets used for printing and servicing.  "Depleted" is an actual sensor that detects the ink is actually out.  The "depleted" message will require replacement of the depleted cartridges.

Some ink is used from all the colors and black to "prime" the air out of the system when a new cartridge is installed.  This will use ink, and if a cartridge was nearly depleted the priming may be enough to finish it.  I usually replace the color cartridges all at the same time, if one or more are depleted and the rest are low.

I do not think a replacement printer would act any differently.

HP is now monitoring my printer, since the black running up seems like a sinsor problem to them. They will stand by their guarentees.. Thanks for your input.
