I have an error message that says Scanner failure: power off and on.....I've power cycled a few time and comes back to the same spot....is there a way to reset the machine and see if that clears it up?

The troubleshooting steps in this page may help.

You can perform a semi-reset as follows: turn off the printer and unplug the power connection.  Press and hold the # and 3 keys while pluging in the printer and turning it on.  A more agressive reset can be done by holding the # and 6 keys while turning on the printer.

Is the scanner bulb lighting? Have you tried the steps in this page?  Unfortunately if the scanner is not working the FAX connot work.
