I am trying to connect my wireless printer to my chromebook. It is a HP envy 5540. And it is not showing up as a new device when i go into settings of my chromebook.

You can't directly install it. Chrome OS does not have its own driver stack like a real operating system. You have to use google cloud print.

The 5530 is directly cloud print enabled. Not sure about the 5540 but I believe it can:

Go to the Chrome Web Store and install the app named "HP Print".
Run the app, and add your printer by typing the IP address it is using. (You can find this by printing a Network Configuration page from the printer's control panel).
Now when you want to print something, type Ctrl-P. A dialog will open, showing the print "Destination". Change the destination from the default "Save as PDF" to your printer.
Works great for me! Also, I have read on Chrome support forums that it actually can also print via USB cable, but I've not tested this yet...
Please view this document that contains instructions for using HP Print on a Chromebook.
