I am having the same problem as apparently everyone else is.  New printer, plugged it, moving through install process and the #$%@ing carriage wont move to the left.  Really, HP? I expected more.  Your help please.

@jmhardaway, Here is a link that may assist you with the carriage being jam. I hope this helps.

The print cartridge holder would not center on my new printer.  I solved it by moving the control panel screen down to its original position before I started setup.  Then I selected my language again.  This time the language lit up instead of just having a highlight bar on the right hand side.  Then, a new screen appeared on the control panel and my machine started to make print setup noises.  This included moving the print cartridge mechanism.  When I opened the door, the print cartridge mechanism moved and then aligned itself in the middle where I could put in the print cartridges.

Hi Normmcc1932,

I understand that you're trying to install a new ink cartridge.  I would take a look at the video below.

Let me know how it goes.

Was having the same problem as everyone else here.

Tried power cycling, but was not able to get the cartridge holder to move to the left in order to install the cartridges.

Just ended up pulling the mechanism to the left by hand, installed the cartridges, and everything went smoothly from then on.

Its printing out the calibration pages as I type this.

Weird problem with the printer, but am hoping this is a one-time issue.

I have a new HP Pro 8600 inkjet printer and I have tried turning it off and on numerous times to get the ink cartidge holder to move over to the left so I can install the ink cartridges for the first time and I am having no luck.....help this is very frustrating....

Well, after spending several hours unsuccessfully trying to get the print cartridge carrier to move to the left so I could access the print cartridge carrier, I was successful!  I had tried the "hard boot" several times before, also unsuccessfully.  But, this time I saw on the video that HP recommended 0n this forum, that the printer be plugged directly into the wall socket.  (I had been plugging it into a surge protector outlet).  I did not believe this would help, but I looked at the printer cord to see how long it was and it was long enough to reach an open wall socket nearby.  Unplugging the printer from the back, I then plugged the cord directly into the wall socket, then into the back of the printer and miraculously, after some weird sounds, opened the cartridge access door to see the cartridge carrier to move to the left, where I could access it.  Needless to say, I was shocked that such a simple thing might have resolved this issue.  I do not know if it will work for anyone else, or work the next time I have to change the ink cartridge, but it is worth a try.  However, I believe all equipment should be protected by a surge protector, so HP should resolve this design flaw!
