I believe they are talking about Wireless Direct Security code and/or the routers security or the EWS passcode.   Go here for the User Guide and read all.  I find nothing.

Use the PDF search for security, passcode, password.

I am not sure if this solution will help you completely.  (It sounds like you are having a problem with people using your ink and paper??) I was able to put a password on mine to keep my wireless connection from being accessed via cellphone.  I am on a home network but my printer was visible and accessible as was my wifi connection through it.  Not sure about the USB  or direct aspect but this will help with wireless. Here is how:

On the printer's home screen you will see icons on the bottom row.  The second one from the left brings up HP Wireless Direct Settings.  Make sure the Security is set to ON.  Press SECURITY PASSCODE just under this which will bring up a screen with a code number on it.  WRITE IT DOWN.  This will be needed to access wifi through the printer.  HOWEVER, anyone with physical access to your printer can get the code by doing these steps.  It is not hidden.

Once I did this I was unable to access wifi via the printer through my smartphone without the security code.  I was also unable to access the printer via my smartphone without being connected to my wifi which is password protected.  This did not change the access via physical contact.  Perhaps a locked cabinet would help?

Good luck.
