HP 7210 printer

HP 7210 printer with continuous Aligning cartridge message. Have turned off machine, unplugged it, removed both ink cartridges and rebooted machine with no success. It is unusable. Help please. btw this problem started with attempting to replace the correct HP black ink cartridge.

Is the printer printing the alignment pages but failing the alignment, or does the screen say aligning but nothing is happening? If the page is printing but the alignment is failing it may be because the sensor used for alignment has become fogged with ink aerosol.  The sensor is located on the lower right side of the holder for the cartridges.  You should be able to clean the underside of the sensor with a damp Q-tip.

Thanks Bob but the problem is the continuous, even eternal, message scrolling along the bottom of the window:  'Aligning cartridges. Please wait.'

Does the printer try (or succeed) to pick paper?  There are a few suggestions I have seen that may may help:

  • Press OK on the front panel to complete the alignment.
  • Try resetting the printer - unplug any cables, then unplug the power cord for the printer.  Press and hold the # and 6 keys on the front panel, then plug the printer in and allow it to power on and reset.

The printer initially says to load up with white paper and push 'ok'. Done x many. Then it simply scrolls the message and does not try to pick up paper or do anything else.

I've turned it off, unplugged it, removed both cartridges, replaced them or left them out and replaced when instructed, pressed #6 and also #9 when rebooting all to no avail.

Tried all of above a good many times.

One last thing to try - go through the document here and go through the steps as if there were a paper jam.  Remove the duplexer (or blank back panel).  Note the large paper feed rollers.

  1. Figure : Rotate and clean the rollers
    Photograph of rollers to clean
  2. Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.

Gently rotate the rollers in an upward direction about one full revolution to reset the paper feed.  Replace the duplexer, turn the printer off and back on.

If this does not resolve the issue I am out of ideas.

Thanks for trying, I'll need to get a new printer I suppose.
