I wish I had read this forum before I purchased the hp envy 4520 last night. It loooks like the failure ofUSB to connect is still an ongoing problem. I've tried EVERY solution - carefully followed each. Uploaded software from disc, downloaded from hp.
Uninstalled and re installed. Carefully made sure no cable was connected until instructed and Sill FRED (feckin ridiculous electronic device) will not connect to my Dell Optiplex 170L - XP. Errors from the install wizzard of not findinding the specified module, errors in the hp installer. It trys and trys to complete the USB connection. Tried every port.
I contacted Dell support - their technicians spent 8 hours of remote fixes - cleaning up broken drivers in my computer and patching my OS. Every couple of hours one would call and have me plug/ unplug the USB cable.
Dell support has not given up I am to call after 8 am Monday to continue the connection saga.
Has anyone found the exact root of this evil life sucking FRED? Is it a bug in HP software?
I have been a loyal user of HP printers for many years but this one may be the straw that... Time to go meditate.

Hi @mjhicks,
Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
As I understand you are having issues installing your HP Envy 4520 printer. I'll be really glad to help you with this issue.
Let’s try to fix this issue by doing a clean install. Follow the steps mentioned below:
First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
· Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
· Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
· Restart your computer.
· Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
· Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
· Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
· Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
· Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
· Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
· Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
· Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.
· Now restart your computer again.
· Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
· Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
· Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
· Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.
- Click on this link to download and install the full feature software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
If you are still facing the issues to remove the driver, then try using a 3rd party software removal applications like "Revo uninstaller" or "Wise" to completely remove the programs.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you.

My computer seams to have some difficulty with the instructions...
Each of the items to type in "run" just results in "Windows cannot find..."
perhaps my OS (XP Pro) is broken and needs to be reinstalled...???
If possible can you call me and talk me thru? If so please private message for voice contact info.

Still won't connect via USB
I un installed ALL hp software, uninstalled ALL hp printers including my older j510
Could not find device manager or "printui.exe /s" or “c:/programdata” - instead Searched for and deleted empty hp folders
Ran Ccleaner 3 times till it came back with zero then ran registry clean up
Restarted between steps then went to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” and “Function Discovery Provider Host”
set each as instructed
Restartedjsut to be sure everything stayed as I set it then used the link and downloaded the sofware matching my OS for my printer.
Ran the set up - Even with the option to download and make google chrome my default browser
I thought since I had not opted for this before it was trying to use Internet Explorer but no it still is trying to use Internet Explorer which no longer works with XP
When I first ran the set up and ran into the problem XP I used Firefox to go to hp connected and I needed a code from the printer and the only way to get the code was to connect thru the wireless so I did and set up the connected account....I
I don't want to leave the WIFI on just when a guest with a connected device is visiting and wnats to print something...
So I would like to get it connected via the USB.
But still would not connect. the printer showes in the start menu but has never made it into the control panel under "Printers & Faxes"
I'm ready to return the printer under warranty and go with another brand. I hope I can reinstall my older hp printer on my PC or another PC that also has XP without trouble or this is one house that will be a no Hewelett Packard zone.
